SPOILERS for/through A Dance With Dragons
I finally just finished reading this last weekend, so I haven’t really had a chance to read up on any of the theories about how Jon could survive/be brought back from his assassination, which you know he will, because no way no how is his story done (unless GRRM is trying to make a statement about how in reality people don’t always get to finish their stories before they die, an argument someone actually made to me re: Sandor Clegane after A Storm of Swords when I insisted at that time that no way, no how was HIS story finished… and then we got the Grave Digger, so, y’know…).
That parenthetical kind of got away from me there.
Anyway, during a sleepless night last night, it occurred to me that what will most likely happen is that Melisandre will resurrect him. Hopefully, she’ll be better at it than Thoros of Myr, and Jon won’t be a creepy sentient zombie like Beric Dondarrion or Catelyn. And then Jon’s service in the Night’s Watch will be done, because his vows ended with his death. I actually would not be at all surprised to learn that Bowen Marsh and Melisandre conspired in this together, and that this was the intention all along.
Jon won’t be happy about it, of course, because of his certainty that he’s right about what needs to happen re: the Watch and the Wildlings and the Wall, and that Bowen Marsh is wrong, but Jon will be free to leave the wall and become a real player in the Game of Thrones, and perhaps meet up with Danaerys, become one of the heads of the three-headed dragon, FINALLY learn the truth about his parentage, etc.
OR maybe the one theory I did read that he’ll come back as King of the Others is really where GRRM is going with this.
Or maybe he really is just dead. But I sincerely doubt it.
At any rate, I just really hope that Ghost is okay.
